Okay, I was unsure what topic to put this under... But, DH and I were talking the other night about predators and how others are loosing chickens and how lucky we have been that we have not lost one single one so far... except for a duck that never gets put up. Anyways, we thought it might have something to do with the lights we have up. In the begining after the chicks got bigger and we pulled down the heat lights, I told DH that I still wanted to keep up some type of light so that I could see what was going on at night. So, he put these lights up for me (pics). It has detered the predators. We also thought if you did not want to put up these type of lights up... what about motion lights. Just a thought to keep the predators away. I will say, we do have our fare share of predators... we live on 40 acres with everything from foxes, cats, coons, skunks, possoms, bears... you name it... we have it. I honestly feel that they steer clear because of the lights.... we also have dogs... but they didnt get moved to the coop area until after we lost the duck, and it was for procautionary measures only.

Just a thought and good luck

I like the idea of a motion-sensing light. I wonder if it would work? I have not lost any of my babies, but we're in the city so the only "predators" really are cats and dogs.

Hmmm...We haven't lost a chicken to predators ever, either, and now that I see your post I wonder if it's because of the motion sensing light we have on the back of the garage, near the coops.

DH was the one that suggested that I say something about it... thought it might help those that have been loosing theirs to the nasty predators. I do have to say too though... my son also puts out live traps... interesting though we have not caught anything for a while since the lights went up. It was just a thought and wanted to try to help... glad to know that their are others out there with lights too and no attacks... wonder if I need to do a poll

Motion Detecting lights work great. Thou a smart predator will get used to it (Ignore it after time).

Bubba is right, they will get used to lights after a while, even motion lights. I have a high pressure sodium light down by the barn thats on dust-dawn and it is very helpful for predator deterant... I can see them when they walk under the light. I cant shoot what I cant see so it has paid for itself many times over, even if it doesent directally deter predators.

As for the motion lights, again, animals get used to them. I have one by my sliding glass door in the back of the house and I have found fox scat less than 10 feet from the back door.

I wouldnt bet the life of my animals on any lights...
