just a very cute picture

What a great picture! I agree - I loved it even before I saw the peeps - now it's that much better.

Unbelievable as it sounds... my hubby is seriously talking about adding Peacocks/hens to our farm. I don't have a run for them so they would have to free range. I could probably lock them up at night but during the day they would be able to get anywhere. Is that a problem? How far do they roam? I'm guessing my dogs would be a threat to them just as they are to my chickens?

Any suggestions, helpful hints -- tell me to forget it. I'm just trying to please my husband (does it make a difference if I really wanted them and gently "gave him the idea that it was his idea?"

Right about the dogs. Peacocks fly so that does help. Locking them up at night may be a problem. They would rather roost up high, like in a tree or on a building, so getting them in a house may be hard. But if you start young and get them used to it??? Mine range pretty much as far as I can see them, and then some (however far that is?). Their 'base' is the chicken pen and that is the center of their roamings. They need a lot of room and eather no or understanding neighbors to freerange.

Chirpy, I'd start with peeps, contain them in the area you want as your "home base". When they grow a bit and are able to get away from predators then you let them out during the day, as they get older, you won't have to worry about getting them in for the night because you won't be able to catch them.

Do you have a large dog kennel with a roof? Those work well on a temporary basis.

My peacocks sleep in the trees at night. They do wander but pretty much stay within my farm, but I have seen one or two with a death wish go across the street.

Good luck!
