HI everyone! Been reading through the topics as a lurker for a bit and finally decided to take the plunge and order a few chicks from MPC. After reading, I wish I had ordered more - I now have 4 RIR and 4 leghorns on order for about a month from now. We have 26 acres and no animals except a few barn cats, but we have a huge barn and tons of room. I recently decided to become a lacto-ovo vegetarian and I figured the best way to get cruelty free eggs is to have pampered chickens.

Besides, hubby also wants guineas to help get rid of the ticks, so I am starting with the chickens. I ordered them for a month out so he'll get at least two months to help me build a coop or equivalent.

I've got all the supplies ready for the brooder - we'll keep it in the three season room for now, or out in the barn if the temp is too high in there. My one worry, will they be ok if I go to work? I'll take the day off the day they arrive, and as it appears they will most likely arrive on a wednesday I generally have thur through sunday off so they'll have a few days of constant vigilance.. After that, however, I'll be at work for 7-8 hours. I'll check on feeder and water before I go, but will they make it ok?

from Ohio. So glad you joined. Your chicks will be fine while you are gone. Just make sure everything is full before you leave and they have to area to get out of the heat if the brooder gets to warm. I always say it is better to be a little cooler than to warm. They can always snuggle together but if it's too hot, there's nothing they can do except get away from the light. Good Luck.

thanks for the welcome! Now I have to figure out what kind of coop to build. We have an old trailer we could use, also have a barn and lots of field space. Plus it needs to be good in the winter - if we make a tractor, maybe just pulling it in the barn when it gets cold would work? decisions decisions.. my hubby is only here on weekends to help me so it can't be a palace just yet.
