Been over 65 years since I had my last flock of chickens. Finding lots of information and it becomes confusing so sometimes I will ask dumb questions and some thoughtful. Who knows. For starters it appears incubating eggs requires the the eggs be placed point end down yet my newely purchased incubator suggest the eggs be placed with the point up ???. Might point out in the past I always started out with chicks not eggs and there appears to be too much information out there on what works best with incubation. Never had a course in egg hatching so having some frustrating moments.

Greetings and welcome to BYC! So glad you joined us. You know, it's never too late to get back into chickens. They're good to lower blood pressure :D There's a wealth of info, knowledge and experience shared in the multitude of threads. Browse around and see what interesting stuff you can find. By all means post away when the desire strikes you, especially if you have questions (provide as much detail/info as possible and pictures truly help)... With all the great folks here, generally someone will respond in no time at all. Please make yourself at home!

Oh, if you haven't done so already, PLEASE put at least your general location in your profile. It could be very important if/when you ask for or offer help or advice. You know, climate issues and such. Old folks like me :old will never remember & look there first. To add it, mouse hover over Account top right and a drop down will appear. Click on Personal Details and scan down. You'll see the spot for Location. Then go to the bottom and save changes. Thanks! Hope you enjoy the site!

Welcome Vineyarder! Great to have you here at BYC!

You definitely want the point down. The air sac is in the wide end of the egg, and that should go up.
X2! Pointy end down for sure!
Welcome to BYC. Plenty of helpful folks here who will help with any questions you have. I hope you enjoy the site as much as I do.

Welcome. Yes, if incubating, place fat end up. There is a wealth of information in the learning center. I've been incubating for 5 years in my home made bators. Every single season, before I plug in my bator, I review the wealth of information in this compilation of mini articles and studies, "Hatching Eggs 101". When it comes to incubating, I've forgotten more than I know, so it's imperative for me to review each season. Words of wisdom: The instruction sheet that came with your bator is most likely full of errors. The thermometer and hygrometer that came with your bator, even if built in may very well be grossly out of calibration. Go to the learning center and learn from the experts how to calibrate your equipment, and how to hatch your eggs! BTW, I calibrate my thermometers in a cup of water @ 100*F, using a good medical grade thermometer as my gold standard. Tip of the day: If your bator has a fan, your goal temp should be 99.5 - 100*. If no fan, temp measured at top surface of eggs should be 102*.

G’Day from down under thevineyarder :frow Welcome!

I am pleased others have been able to point you and those eggs in the right direction :p

I only have experience with hatches under a 'set and forget' broody hen ;)

Good luck with the hatch!

I do hope you enjoy being a BYC member. There are lots of friendly and very helpful folks here so not only is it overflowing with useful information it is also a great place to make friends and have some fun.

You might want to also Find Your State Thread and pop in and say hello.

BYC has Topic of the Week discussions which I have found to be a great resource, informative and sometimes entertaining; so definitely worth checking out. This one might be of particular interest to you:
