Nothing like a good heritage roo! I raise lots of freedom rangers and they're efficient food conversion machines similar to cornishX but with a better forage drive. But I love the flavor of a 6-12 month old heritage breed rooster. If I could grow them for the same cost in feed I would.
I accidentally ate a 7 month old Rhode Island Red hen. She was my egg chicken but she jumped in the dog pen. She was dead within seconds. I didn’t want that meat to go to waste. I cleaned her real quick and cooked her a few days later. So far that is the best chicken I have ever eaten. I have butchered lots of Cornish X crosses. They produce a lot of meat but I think the quality was even less than chicken from the grocery store. Raising 7 month old hens for market would be cost prohibitive. You’d just have to do it as a treat. After a cost analysis you’d probably have to sell it for $40 to break even.
I was mad at my dog and grateful to my dog at the same time. I never would have intentionally killed a good laying hen for eating.
