just candeled my eggs :-)

So we are trying again with our homemade incubator. I just candeled our 8 eggs that have been in for 8 days and saw 3 moving embryo's for sure, 1 looked empty and the other 4 were questionable. The shells are dark so all I could see was a big blob on the 4 questionable ones. Today is my middle son's birthday and he was so excited to see the baby chick moving inside the egg. It is really an amazing experience.

Showed my husband how you could see the baby chicks through the shells, he got this totally in awe look on his face, I think that's the first time I have ever seen that look on him, it was actually kinda touching. Then he said "So that's what that guy on Dirty Jobs was talking about." Moment over.

Momofchicks it is an incredible experience isn't it? I always have trouble being able to see through brown eggs which is what my girls give me & what I normally hatch. When I candle on the 7th day I always look to see how large of a blob I've got as a way of gaging.... it's usually the 2nd week that I get to see the blob itself move & it's always such a relief at the same time I'm in awe. Now tonight I got to candle white duck eggs and for the first time I got to see what I believe is the heart beatings & it's again just incredible.

I have some that are just to brown to see through, I need to get an egg candler. Right now I am using my husbands Ryobi light with a piece of cardboard over it with a hole in the middle and a ponytail holder holding it in place. Let Macgyver try and beat that

my eggs are all brown too, except for green ones. I was able to use a mag flashlight and it worked pretty well. The 4 that had blobs in them I couldnt' tell if it was moving or not, I'll try again in a few days.

Question: how long can the eggs be out of the 'bator during candling before you have to start worrying about them?

i'm not sure but I work really fast. I have my kids bring an egg, I candel it, and they put it back and get another one. It may be out of bator for 2 minutes tops.

4-H web site says 30 minutes they can be out.
