I am off to pick up 13 laying hens approx. 8-9 months old, 5 roosters and 5 ducks tomorrow. I welcome all advice as I have not had chickens in 20+ years. We spent the day building the coop. Tomorrow morning we will put the door on it then go get our flock and the wire to make the run. I don't even know what kind of chickens they will be. Getting them from a friend of a friend. I plan to put the roosters in the pot as I don't like being woke up that early. LOL. Hope to do a lot of learning and make a few friends along the way here.

Welcome to the BYC flock! We are glad you joined us!

If you are not sure what breeds you end up with, post some pictures on the "what breed and gender" thread and I am sure someone can help identify them for you.

Good luck! Sounds like exciting times!

Welcome to BYC. Glad you decided to join our flock. Raising chickens is a wonderful experience for children. Our children and granddaughter (pictured in my avatar) loved our chickens and made lap pets of the calmer and more gentle breeds. If you haven't done so already, definitely check out our Learning Center at https://www.backyardchickens.com/atype/1/Learning_Center. There is loads of useful information there. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have. We are here to help in any way we can. Good luck in finishing your coop and getting your flock.

Just about to leave and pick up the flock. Transformed the back of the van into a flock mover. I have a feeling I will be bothering you a lot over the next couple of weeks. I will let you know when they are home and "settled in".

I'm back and I feel like crying. Those poor things were living in hell. Well, their lives will be different from now on. I have some barred rocks(?) and a couple of americanas(?) I will try and get some pics soon.

It sounds like you did a rescue mission. Wishing you the best of luck.
