Hi my name is Alex. I am 8 years old. My Mommy is PineBurrowPeeps. She is helping me to type okay.
I have a Birchen Modern Game Hen named Onyx.
I got her from the Poultry Congress show in Springfield MA, she was given to me by a very nice lady who raises Modern Game chickens and shows them. She has really nice birds. We wanted to buy Onyx but she suprised us and gave her to me because I am in 4-H. I was very happy and Mommy said she was a really expensive bird and that she was a gem, so we should call her Oynx after the stone because she is so pretty.
Also at the same show I bought a Bantam Dominque Rooster from someone who is also a member here on Back Yard Chickens. My Mom says she forgets who it is.
I bought him for $5.00 and he is very handsome. And loud. He crows a lot and we named him Mario Hilario after a news and weather guy here in Rhode Island who talks alot.
Onyx and Mario live in a special cage together where they won't get dirty and stuff because I show them in 4-H. 19 days ago I put 2 of Oynxs eggs in my Moms incubator.
I turned the eggs myself everyday.
Yesterday on day 18, my Mom said we should candle the eggs one more time before we stop turning them. When we did we found out that one of the chicks had died inside the egg and the other was already pipped in the aircell. My Mom said the chick is coming early and we put the egg back in the incubator. We opened the other egg and the chick had died not that long ago and Mom said the yolk was all sucked in and stuff. We don't know why it died and I was sad. It looked just like Oynx.
This morning when I woke up my Mom took me by the hand and brought me into the room where the incubator was. The chick had hatched! With some help from my Mom. She said that because it was a little early she didn't have time to get the humidity right and the membrane was stuck to the chick. So she helped her hatch and I am so happy. This little chick also looks just like Oynx and Mom says it looks like it might be a Birchen too.
It is my first chick that I hatched in an incubator.
I would like to show you pictures of my birds but my Mom keeps calling her camera bad words.
Maybe later.
My Mom loves Back Yard Chickens and is on here all the time. I am excited to have my own username so I can read and talk to other chicken people. I want to be a chicken farmer and an architect some day.
My Mom or Dad will always be with me when I am on BYC.
I love my chickens and I hope my new chick is a pullet.
