I just inherited 4 chicks from someone who literally dumped them in a trash can at the gas station in 40 degree weather, the poor things. The person at the IFA store told me they look about 2-3 weeks old. Have know idea what they are. I have 1 solid black, 1 black with white spots, a creamy white, and a tan one. I have them happily in a large bin with a heat lamp right now, but I know they are going to out grow it fast. But I have no idea how to go about building a chicken coop. Everything I've seen looks awesome, but I will be building mine on somewhat of a slope, so I well need to have a raised one where I can level it out. I don't know how big it needs to be for the 4 chickens. I'm in Utah, and I get a lot of snow in the winter, so what is the best way to build it to keep them warm in the winter, prefer a light be able to be inside. I would love to really build it for under $100.00, if possible. Anyone have any suggestions, or even a plan with measurements as I'm a girl, and it would be great if I could have Home Depot pre-cut most of my wood before I bring it home.

Thanks in advance. I would love any help you can give me. I've never had chickens, but figured I will give it a try.

I would check out your local Craigslist. People are always selling them.
Im so glad you saved them. I wish I was closer I could help you out. I'm sure lots of byc'ers will have some fantastic ideas for you and your new chickies. Good luck.

Thanks, I've been searching ads on 2 different online sites. Tons of people selling, but everything is over $300.00. I would much rather build one for much cheaper. I'm just crossing my fingers I don't have any roosters. I did check with the city, and they told me I'm allowed 6 chickens, and 1 rooster as long as he is quiet till 7am. So we are in the clear with the city. So that is good.
