I have a staggered hatch going on in my incubators. I use one LG as an incubator, and one as a hatcher you see. I originally set 4 BO eggs from some chickens I was given but the chickens are OLD. The rooster looked to be about 100 and the hens aren't much younger. 4 eggs is all I got before they quit laying. So...I set the 4 but 1 was infertile and 2 quit early (probably due to the sheer age of the parents) and so imagine my surprise when I actually had one egg make it to lockdown! I put it in the hatcher last night and forgot about it, assuming it too would perish. A few minutes ago my husband yelled: "there's a bird in the bator!" and lo and behold, Bruno Jr. was born. He is none too happy about his solitude and the next group of babies isn't due until Friday at the earliest...oh well. Going to buy a feather duster I suppose... My silkie is still broody and her chicks are feathered enough to separate so maybe I will try to slip him under her...under close watch of course...

You could also grab him a friend at the feed store... That's what I did with my little loner

My boyfriend wasn't super happy about it but I took the opportunity to get yet another breed to add to my flock... I had planned on whittling down to two separate purebred breeding flocks when we move but so much for that idea

Maaaaaybe I can manage to at least keep a separate Silkie flock once those eggs hatch.

I did think of that but my TSC has a 6 chick minimum and when I have many due to hatch in the next two weeks, I can't justify 6 more chicks right now. I tried to put the little man with my broody silkie tonight but she wasn't fooled and is ready to be done with motherhood for now. Her babies are a few weeks old so the little fella is back in the brooder by himself for now...

Get a small plush toy animal, and a small mirror, and put them in the brooder with your solo chick. Also, if you have or can find something like a feather duster, put that in there too - they love to snuggle up into them.
