I am a 1st Timer. I have 9 (Hopefully) Girls. 3 NH Reds ( Arielle, Elsa, Sophia), 3 Buff Orpingtons (Cinderella, Anna, Aurora), & 3 Golden Laced Wyandottes ( Snow White, Belle, & Jasmine). Think there's a theme...hmm. This what happens when you give your grand kids naming rights. Bubba the bulldog, was similarly named because that's all the grans could say at that time. What a difference 4 years make!
I've always wanted chickens but didn't think that I had the time or energy for them. It's been 6 weeks since I brought the tiny fuzz balls home. I'm amazed at how quickly they've grown.
I'm not amazed at how much I am enjoying them. The work is not so much after raising 5 kids & an assortment of pets - it's pretty much a piece of cake. They love free ranging in the afternoon when I come home from work. The Orpingtons are so social - following me around the yard and climbing up the back of the wrought iron chair that I sit in the garden in. I may have been a lady pirate in a former life because it feels so natural to have 3 birds at (not on) my shoulders. The NH Reds are brave as a group always the first out and last in - leading the others on excursions through the gardens. The Wyandottes are shy and hesitant with any change. The individual personalities are shining through as well. I've dogeared my copy of Storey's Raising Chickens. My husband thinks I've cracked up ( no egg pun intended) with my current choice of bedtime reading material. I've found so much useful information on BYC - thanks to all of the sharing . I'm hoping that Arielle doesn't turn out to be Aaron after all. I cannot inflict a rooster on my neighbors. Well thank you in advance for welcoming me into your community.
