I just need to say how sweet and unique roos can be. I just adore mine, and wish I lived in the country where they could free range all day and crow on a high post at the crack of dawn for all to hear. But alas I digress.

I have been keeping a BCM roo for breeding and his best BCM buddy roo (who's comb is too big for breeding) as a back up. Well the good breedable roo got lame (I think Mareks but am unsure) Well I could not decide what to do. before I had made the decision that any other birds to come down with Makeks would be culled immediately.. But then I did not want to, and saw how the other roo was trying to take care of him. Well he went from bad to worse, from limping to not being able to walk at all and on his side. I built a sling and started antibiotics because I noticed swelling and a hematoma and thought it might help and since I am not going to eat him and he isnt gonna lay eggs lol I figured it couldn't hurt) . Well after a few days in the sling and the meds I decided to cull him since he hated the sling and did not seem to be improving. But thought I would let him have one last day with cuddling with his buddy.

Low and behold he can now get up on his haunches and get around. He never lost his appetite and is improving every day. Oh I actually think he might come through this.

I am just in awe though on how sweet he is and how sweet the other roo is to him. They normally share a 6x4x5 coop just the 2 of them but right now I have the injured one in the garage just out and about. I was keeping him in the box but he has since gotten out and is hanging out in another area with lots of hay moving around and getting to water and food on his own. He is kept company of course most of the time by his buddy.

Here he is a few days ago when I saw that he could get up again on his own

And here is his buddy with him

I must say your boys are very handsome. Congrats to you for not giving up on that boy. I like you take the decision to cull very serious and it looks like you did good by him. Hope he continues to improve.

Susan, how sweet...Isnt it amazing how loving birds can be? I would have done the same thing too-not as well as you did with the sling and all but a try none the less. Good for you and hope he pulls through to make some beautiful babies for you and us!

that sounds like what happened to my little chicklet....no idea what happened to him...but one morning he just couldn't get up (no preceding lameness that I noticed though)......he got better slowly...then regressed completely....but is now 100%

He is only 4 months old now...and is quite a bit smaller than his hatchmates....but, gets around completely normally now

Right now he's on the rug in front of the couch i'm on picking things off the floor......lol Don't give up hope!

Awww! What a sweet story! I was just discussing with a co-worker how awesome chickens can be! Not many people around here actually think of them as pets, and most everyone thinks I am so lame...

Oh well. I agree, roos are super great. I've got a love of a roo, myself...
