New chicken mom. Is this just pasty butt? I'm hoping it isn't a prolapsed vent. She is pooping but she gets all wet and is dirty again within 10 minutes of me cleaning her up.

I would investigate further. Maybe touch it with a glove on. See what it feels like. If it feels squishy with a layer of skin, then it's a prolapse. It's a little hard to tell from the picture. What are you feeding? Are you giving them chick grit? Grit is very important even with crumbled feed.

It is soft. 😔 We are feeding the chick crumble.

She's just under a week old, and all the grit I've seen is for 2 weeks +.
I give grit starting on day 3, once they know what feed is. All poultry nutrition experts I have talked to say to start them on grit at that stage. I would start them on it now since they are old enough. But as to the problem, I'm not exactly sure how to address that, since it doesn't look like an external prolapse. Is she acting normal? Eating and drinking?

It doesn't look as inflamed as the pictures I've seen of a prolapsed vent, but it is sticking out pretty far, so I'm guessing that is what it is. She is still pooping, so I'm assuming she's eating but I haven't seen her eat. She spends a lot more time under the brooder than the rest of them though. I'm going to monitor her more closely and separate her so she doesn't get pecked at.

Hi can I ask how this chick is doing now? This is my first post here and I actually joined this site because I have a chick that has the same condition. I love her so much she seems to be doing OK otherwise, probably only 1 week old. Thank you!

She's doing great! She got a little behind growth wisely, but now she's just about caught up to everyone else again. :)
