I am a newly retired nurse starting on my journey to creating a small 1 acre homestead in North Florida. In one year I have completed most of my raised and ground garden beds, have a She-Shed (12x30' shed converted into a workshop for herbal medicine making), and a He-Shed (tools, equipment, and everything else I don't know where to put). In addition, I have acquired one grumpy old senior cat, an awesome young stray cat, and have another kitten adoption in the works. My chicken Coop and Run are being built now and will be finished by the end of April. So, what's next? Chickens of course!

I'm a total newbe regarding chickens. I plan to go to a farm nearby and purchase 2 month old chicks. So far I am leaning towards a couple Black Australorps, a golden-Laced Wyandotte and a Silver-Laced Wyandotte to start my flock. Possibly start out with an Olive Egger too. Then wait a month or so (when they are ready to purchase at 2 mo. old) and get a Buff Orpington, a Golden Comet, and an Easter Egger. Six to Eight chicks total.

How's my breed choices sound for a beginner like me? Words of advice for this newly hatching chicken lady is most certainly welcomed!
