Good Morning and Hello!

I am introducing myself to the forum for the first time, however have been a reader for about a year or so. This is also a thank you to all those of you who take the time to post to other people's problems and questions, because your information has helped me greatly!

I unexpectedly became a chicken owner last summer when I told some friends moving across country that I would lake their 3 Barred Rock hens if no one would. I few weeks later (and just days before they officially moved) we had a trailer holding a coop with 3 chickens. I have enjoyed them ever since!

I visited the forum when Miss Orange survived an attack by an unknown predator, looking for advice on how to clean her wounds and insure she would survive the winter. She did survive the winter, only to be taken off with one of her sisters by a hawk a few weeks ago. I cried! Miss Orange and I bonded through the winter of daily conversations and special high protein treats.

That incident lead me to join BYC for research predators and how to care for and merge my future baby chicks with my lone hen. Everyone's amazingly informative posts also made me aware that my lone hen, Miss Blue, was in need of company. I found and purchased two adult Barred Rocks that are large and pretty, but came to me with problems.

That brings me to my Subject title... Those two new birds have mites. I would never had know that was the problem if I have not seen a very clear picture of a chicken who had those blue-gray scales on her legs from mites. I sprinkled DE in their coop and Miss Blue's coop (just in case the mites decide to look else where) and smeared Vaseline on both of the legs. It was probably not the strangest thing I have every done for one of my chickens, but it was close.

I may not be a frequent poster to BYC, but will always be a daily visitor!

Welcome..good job with the vaseline...you may want to do that a few more times. Just keep a close eye on their legs.

Thanks, will do! I have done tons of reading on the subject of mites and plan to use the Vaseline trick every other day with the occasional warm foot bath and DE dust baths till they look clear. Hopefully their legs will clear up completely and look normal again.
