Hiya,
My name is Toni and my boyfriend and I are currently raising 15 indian runner ducklings.. we have 4 at 1 week old and 11 at 2 weeks old..
We collected the 11 last night and to say the state they were in was disgraceful would be an understatement by far.. they had no water, no food and they didn't have the strength to stand.. they are stupidly under weight. We got there and found 2 lying on their sides kicking to try and get themselves up but couldn't. She told us she had bathed them and left them outside to dry so they were very wet, cold and weak. On the journey home I had the heating on and my boyfriend had 2 cuddled up in his top to try and dry them and warm them up.. I honestly didn't think they were going to make it.

Anyway.. I put them under heat and gave them food and water and they stuffed their faces.. now that they've eaten and are dry they are much stronger. Our 1 week old babies are double the size of some of the 2 week olds.. I'll add some pictures shortly.

The main problem is one of the babies which was very weak has a very swollen hock/knee and isn't putting weight on it. He can use it but is limping.. it still has some slight strength there so I doubt it's broken but i'm just wondering what you guys think is the best action, really?

I'll add some pictures of sizes and his knee shortly.

and bless you for Rescuing those poor babies. some folks don't deserve to have animals. first off I'd put your lil one with the injured leg in a container with one more duckling inside your brooder just to keep the others from stampeding him when they get excited and possibly making his leg worse,. Then once you see him making progress start putting him into a nice warm bath so he begins to use his legs and gains strength, this will be good for all your ducklings, but water therapy is awesome for one that is having leg issues help take the weight off the leg and also helps to build strength. Then you need to pick up some "plain" niacin or Brewers yeast and start adding the niacin to their water or sprinkling the BY on their feed. Most chick starter does not have the amt of niacin ducklings need to keep leg problems and also neurological problems for happening, and some ducklings tend to need more than others. 150 mgs of niacin to 1 gal of water mixed real well then put into their waterers. BY at 1 Tab to 1 cup of feed. He could have already been injured by the other ducklings ]stepped on] or it could be something else. but hopefully now under your TLC and with water therapy and supplemental niacin you'll see the baby come out of it pretty fast, hopefully with just rest and the above. Another thing you can do is get some Epsom salt and mix about a cup to a 2 quart of warm water then soak the ducklings leg in it, [Epsom salt works as a laxative so you don't want it to drink this, I have been soaking one of my hens[chicken] foot in a small pint jar of ES and using a jar keeps her from drinking the water. I just wrap her in a towel and she lays there in my lap with her foot in the jar. lol. but ES is great for swelling and may help too. Any way look forward to seeing pics of your lil ones and bless you again for rescuing them.
