hi everyone! just got started. chicks are still in the brooder on my service porch. we live in southern California. can I move the 4 week old chicks outside to the chicken coop/tractor? theyre pretty feathered over. we wont let them outside the coop until they are a bit older like 6-8 weeks. we don't know what kind they are. they were hatched in a school project with some trader joes eggs and some americauna eggs. so we have no idea of the breed. help!!!???

Hi :welcome

Glad you could join the flock! What kind of temps are you having right now? Have you started weaning them off heat already? If they are fully feathered they should be ok to go out to the coop/tractor. I have some four week olds at the moment had we have been having some nice weather (For a change) so have been turning the lamp off during the day but putting it back on for them at night time when it gets chilly.

You could post some pics in the what breed gender section. Here is the link ~ https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/15/what-breed-or-gender-is-this I'm sure other members will be able to help you ID them.

Wishing you the very best of luck and enjoy BYC :frow

I think I just uploaded pics of Rocky and Ryan as named by their 11 year old owner! I'm not good at these things.

Thanks! We've decided to put the red lamp in the coop until it heats up at night then just turn it off. I need my laundry room!! Though I love the little guys!! Can't wait till they're able to roam the yard and play with us!!
