Hello,
I recently built a custom chicken run to act as a temporary location for the chickens I currently own. I have plans of moving in the next few months and only needed something temporary for this reason. With the weather finally reaching a safe point to put my young (6-8 week old) chickens outside I began. I completed the run and attached to pre-built coop.
About an hour ago I began the process of transferring my birds by placing one Rhode Island Red into the run. I wanted to give her about a half-hour to determine any weak spots in the design. Of course, she quickly attempted to squeeze through the fencing to get out of the run...and back to the others. She is still growing...so I'm not as concerned with her...but I do have Sebright bantams which are another story. The main fencing is quite thick and has 1-inch by 1 1/4-inch openings.
After noticing her trying to escape I stapled up some plastic garden/poultry netting. I know this wouldn't be enough on its own but installed it to help keep the chickens in their coop (not anything out).
Will this be enough or should I install something additional fencing?
Please see pictures...
