keep water from freezing

karri the only way I can think of without electricity would be a person going out and changing the water often.

You would still have to get a rubber type bowl. A plastic one will crack if it freezes. The rubber bowls are cheap maybe $5 to $10 at TSC or a farm supply place. They are very sturdy you can smash them with a hammer and the ice pops right out.

If someone could change the water in the AM and in the afternoon you should be okay. I doubt the chickens are going to get off their roosts to drink at night. Mine could'nt anyways cause its so dark.

I guess a hole, but since we haven't seen your coop, not sure. I have a cord in our run right now and they take a peck at it occasionally but it's not food so they ignore it generally.

Schmoo-I haven't seen the rubber waterers?!?!?!? Where I live the feed stores have galvanized steel or plastic, I'll have to keep my eyes peeled. We could actually water 2-3 times a day since we are at home. I am just trying to make our lives as easy as possable. We used to have horses that lived off property but we took care of them and we HATED the winter!!!!!

My coop has always had heated dog water bowls going on 4 years now...We cut an opening in one of the walls up high and fitted the heavy duty extension cord thru...it runs from the garage to the henhouse...never have had a problem and no the hens do not peck at it....
