Hi chicken folks,

We recently inherited some Seramas that were left behind at a chicken show. They have been kept separate from our flocks and coops for both quarantine reasons and because they are roosters who would get themselves in trouble if we put them in one of our established flocks. We are in northern CA, 60’s during the day currently and 30’s overnight. I was told that these are exotic birds kept indoors. We have had these guys in a super small nesting box overnight, 15x15x15, with a quilt over the entry door, and the box itself is then put inside of a large dog cage, 4’x3’x4’ ish, which is also covered overnight with a couple quilts. They are only in there overnight and free range /loose all day. We need to build a permanent structure for them but I’m not sure what they require for this climate. I would like the ugly quilt spectacle off of my back porch though. Advice needed!

Hi I live in southern ca and I keep them outside in their coop at night, Just like the other chickens no problem. We have about the same weather. Babies do fine hatching outside with the mama broody too.

They are lovely! I love the pictures. Thank you for responding. I’ll start building another coop area for our guys. I wanted to make sure I didn’t need heat or anything before picking a spot, so I really needed to know! Thank you again!
