Hi I'm new to the forum, but have been keeping chickens for many years. I recently purchased two young Silkies and one was taken by a hawk. I have a decision to make if I should get another Silkie to keep her company or find her a home. My other hens get to free range our 3 acres and I would hate to have to keep the Silkies cooped up. The hawks don't bother the larger breed hens but it appears the Silkies are just small enough for the Hawks to fly off with. I was hoping to have a nice fuzzy little lap chicken, but our set up might not be right for them. Is there anyone who would like to give her a home?

WELCOME! Those darn hawks! They will get large hens also..it's likely they go into hiding when they see the hawk. Silikes don't see as well with all that fluff. Sorry for your loss. Go to your state thread, see if anyone is close to you.
I usually trim the crest down on mine so they can see better while free ranging. They have such massive eyes, it's a shame they get covered up with feathers

Hello and welcome to BYC! :frow Glad you joined.
If you like to free range, try trimming their head gear as suggested by @Kessel23. Either it will work or it won't. Do you have a rooster or a flighty girl who will sound the alarm when there is an overhead threat? That might help. But if you free range, there will ALWAYS be risk of predation loss regardless if it is a silkie or LF chicken.
