How does everyone knock down the smell in a run. I had no issues cleaning it often but I live in saw pa where its been raining everyday lately. I was using grass clippings when I mowed the grass. but with the dampness its starting to smell. I don't want to hurt my birds. I was going to uses loose sawdust as I have horses and buy in bulk but was worried about them eating it. Any suggestions. thanks

! Pleased to have you aboard! I think if the birds have adequate food they shouldn't eat the sawdust - and it would certainly keep the smell down. I know a lot of folks put sand in their run - allow good drainage which generally equals less odor. Good luck to you!

Hi and welcome to BYC from northern Michigan

Establishing good drainage will help with many moisture issues. Grass clippings, as you have found, are too wet for use as bedding. Sawdust is not a good idea with birds, it can be very dusty and since they are low to the ground it can cause respiratory issues. In addition, it is usually from fresh wood that has not been dried, so can also be high in moisture (both of these issues are true when using it for horse bedding as well).

I like to add a pile of leaves now & then. It gives them something to scratch through and in wet weather it can really help with the wet ground. Good luck!
