Okay, so I'm about to pull my hair out. I noticed that the girls' feed was empty even though I filled it the day before. This is strange because I wasn't having to fill it but once every 1.5 to 2 weeks. So, I filled it yesterday, and when I went out there yesterday evening, I noticed it was basically empty and laying on the coop floor. (I have it raised up on two- 2x4's against the wall.) I went to fill it this morning, not all the way so they hopefully wouldn't waste as much. Well, I saw the culprit. It's Isa, the EE! She gets on top of the feeder to eat, while all of the others are trying to eat.
She knocked it over within two seconds. Argh!

So..... what's the best thing to do here? A different type of feeder? We're using the long, red one with the holes running down it. My hubby thought about building a trough to sit it in. I thought about building a gravity feeder.
I beg you for some advice!

Here's the culprit before they went in their coop!

The feeder was raised up on two then three 2x4's.

Ironically we use a drawer from an old dresser as our feeder. They stand inside it to eat. I worried at first that they would poop all over their food, but they don't. Since they free range much of the time, I only have to fill their feeder about once a week. I sift through the remaining chaff and do find a clump or two of droppings, but nothing to worry me. Two or three can fit in the drawer at once and it is impossible for them to knock it over. The sides of the drawer are good and high, so as they scratch their food, none of it ends up on the ground.

I use a hanging galvanized feeder. It is open on top and the feed pours down into a little tray around the bottom. They can't get their feet in it to scratch and since it is hanging they don't try to roost on it.
