Keeping track of genes

Does anyone use a breeding program for keeping track of offspring, genetics and for line breeding? What would you recommend using?

I currently use Excel, but wondering if there is something better out there or an easier way of doing it.

There are costly software programs you can use, but I, too, just use Excel.
