In the winter, keeping water feeders from freezing is very important, so here are some electricity-free ways.
1.) Change waterer to large, black, rubber dish

2.) If it's outside and has an open top, try ping pong balls or something else that is light that will circulate the water when the wind blows.

3.) Battery-operated plastic swimming fish. The small fish toys are very cheap- set them off in ta closed-top waterer to circulate and slow freezing down.

4.) Create a greenhouse effect/ wind stopper for outside waterers.

5.) Put hand warmers (shake and activate chemical hand warmers) under the waterer (suggested: put in a non flammable sac/bag/covering) . DO NOT put in the water or somewhere they can be pecked open. They can become very dangerous if pecked open- for both the chickens' safety and the coop/ structure.

Good ideas, but none will work here. Everything freezes solid, and stays that way until April. I use the rubber pans for daily ice smashing and bashing.

I realize this is an older post but was curious if anyone had tried hand warmers under waterer to keep water from freezing. In searching came across this feed. It will prevent me from having to change water every 2 hours and shouldn't be too expensive since those days are limited where I live. It can be dangerous during freezing rainy weather going back and forth to coop with water in hand. I use bungie cord around waterer to prevent from tipping so feel it is a safe option since the warmer will be tucked under in vacant pocket area under waterer completely away from birds. I will definitely give it a try when we have below freezing temps that last till midday hours.:wee
