Best chicken -hen. Breed and great layers and okay for all climates . Very new to the chicken scene and excited to get started . Just want to do it the right way and get a good breed. That's easy to handle . I've got the coop going now have to focus on if we want babies or does starting out with a older chicken work better. Thanks for your time
I really don't think there is a best hen, it is just what you prefer. Does it matter what color eggs you get? In Kentucky you want a chicken that will be heat tolerant because the summers get so hot. But it helps to provide shade, a good place to take a dirt bath and maybe some ice water to help beat the heat. On the flip side, the winters can get cold too and chickens with bigger combs can get frostbite. An older chicken won't lay as much as a younger chicken. Typically they lay great for the first few years, then then slow down a little bit. So how many eggs do you want? If you hatch your own you want to make sure you have a plan on what to do if you get any roosters.
