has anyone heard of spraying hi-grade kerosene on chickens and their roosting poles to kill lice, etc. we have some neighbors who are from europe and they say it works and do it on their silkies without any problems - only success.

I've never heard of it - and DE should work just fine!

Whatever you do, don't light a match!

kerosene, as a chemist, yes, it would kill lice, and possibly your chickens...

personally I wouldnt do it, but I ave never heard about it so I shouldnt say much.

Maybe someone else will chime in.

I know this is an old thread, but mixing kerosene and oil and painting it on all the wood in your coop will rid you of all lice and mites for ever! Gramps raised chickens his whole life, up to 400 chickens at one time. He said this works great and he has never lost a chicken.

I’ve just heard of a remedy for illness in poetry using a few drops of kero and a few drops of bettadine in a bowl of water for them to drink, he said to take the water from them for 24 hours to make them thirsty then give it to them to drink, it’s supposed to fix whatever is making them sick!

I realize this is a very old thread, but putting a few drops of paraffin at the back of the neck, under the wings and the tail is a treatment recommended for dealing with lice in Lewis Wright's Practical Poultry Keeper, which I have been reading recently, and which saw at least 23 editions, so was much liked at the turn of the 20th century.
