Look at this Corn Snake I killed near an old pool pump.
I was pulling up a gigantic dandelion when I saw it's tail move. I ran and got a shovel and killed it. I have never killed a snake this big before... totally gross. I fed it to the chickens.
Normally, when I pull dandelions I am careful to look around.
DH cut the grass there yesterday, that's why I thought there wouldn't be anything lurking there.
Corn snakes are not so fearful of humans and do come out in the daylight. Now I know.

How big was it? It still looks fairly young, but pics can be deceiving. While I totally disagree with killing snakes for "no reason", I have to say, at least you didn't just throw it away, the chickens at least made use of it.

Those are great for keeping the rat and mouse population down. Of course, they'd probably like a baby chick, too if you have them running around. That is a snake I would have relocated, but I understand many people don't like snakes no matter what kind.

Honestly I think for some folks its a knee jerk reaction.. i dont kill any snakes unless they are trying to get my girls but I know many people that just immediatly kill them .. Either way its done now and atleast the girls got a treat...

For some reason when I read this, I read it as "popcorn snake". The knee-jerk reaction is actually understandable for me. If I see an ant, I flip a nut and kill it. I'm sure that most are fairly well harmless to me. I just remember catching lizards in Alabama and ended in an ant's nest and was bitten pretty good, and my foot got very swollen (to the point that I couldn't put shoes on to go to the stores. I'm "partially allergic" to ants, they weren't fire ants or anything. Anyways, moral of the story, I have my own personal reasoning behind despising ants. I'm sure people who hate snakes have their reasons, just as anyone who has any fears or hates something probably has a very good reason in their minds.

I didn't know what kind of snake it was (nor did I care), when I killed it.
It's the same as the photos of Corn Snakes on the identification sites for my area.
At almost 3 ft. long (it's constricted quite a bit in the pics.),
it can still inflict a bite.
I understand their place in the ecosystem. I don't hate them, I just don't care to have them in my yard.
I'm not a "snake hunter", but if they get too close to my house or me, I'm not taking any chances.

I fed it the hens, but when I went out there tonight they hadn't touched it.

I am in total agreement with you. I am scared to death of snakes, even the green ones. I wish I weren't, but I am. I don't mind seeing them in the woods, but in my yard and chicken house is another story. I would have killed it as well.
