Killer Guinea?

We have a mixed flock of birds, including 10 hens, a duck, a turkey & 4 guineas.

We let the flock out a few hours ago to free-range as usual. When we went to leave, there was a dead guinea in front of the dog pen. (No, I guarantee the dog couldn’t have gotten to it).

The bird was entirely uninjured except bruising around it’s left eye, which appeared damaged as well. To me, it almost appears that it was an unfortunate, well-placed peck to the head that did it in.

The guineas are just reaching maturity, as we’ve gotten a couple eggs recently. From watching them, there appears to be a larger male, two females, & one which we guessed to be a smaller male, as the large one constantly chases it & runs it off if it gets close to the females. I’m not 100% sure which one is dead, but I’m thinking it’s the one that was picked on.

Has anyone had a “killer” guinea? We are just kind of baffled how a healthy bird died right next to the house & dog pen without hardly any wounds.

Or is it possible that the large male killed a female while trying to mate with it? Just guessing here.

While not the usual result it is possible for dominant guineas to kill other guineas. Another possibility is that the dead guinea suffered a heart attack during a fight.
