We introduced a new rooster (about year old) about 2 weeks ago - kept him separated for just over a week to make sure he was OK and to let the hens meet him through a barrier. We noticed when we did finally put him in with the hens that he seemed to single out one of our light sussex hens. This morning he killed him. We did have a beautiful Plymouth Rock rooster that was a gentle as a rooster can be so this took us by surprise. Has anyone else had this experience?

Added info - he seemed to single out this hen - she was not a dominant hen and had the typical personality of the Sussex's breed. Any information would be extremely helpful.

That was my first reaction that his days are numbered. He is the complete opposit of our Mr Grey - the Plymouth Rock. He is separated at the moment and will stay that way.
Unfortunately some roosters just happen to be bad roosters for one reason or another and that behavior is genetic and there's no way to fix it. Hopefully you can find a better rooster who will treat both you and your ladies with gentleness and respect

Ya no explanation. Sometimes stuff happens like that.
Once I got 2 gold laced Brahmas back when that variety was rare. Luckily for me they turned out to be a pair. Unluckily they took almost a year, I think it was 10 months to mature enough for the hen to start laying. And even more unluckily after 2 or 3 eggs the male killed her.
They were raised together and he had never shown aggression towards her before that.
Idk what happened but that was that.
