Hi everyone,

We brought home two chicks from my daughter's kindergarten class today. They incubated eggs and 5 chicks hatched. I have no idea what kind of chicken they are and I can't tell if they are roosters or hens. We need to have hens for the sake of our neighbors (we live in a city east of San Francisco).

We've been looking forward to this day for weeks now, ever since the eggs were in the incubator. The chicks are now 4 weeks old.

from NJ! Welcome to the world of chickens. You'll have to post pics of your new chicks.

Welcome Sandra!!

Post pictures so we can see them and maybe we can help you out. Chances are you have one rooster, if you just look at it statistically. If you can't have roosters you might consider going to he feed store and picking up some chicks that are sexes as females--no straight runs. Having a lone chicken is never a good idea and your daughter would be so disappointed if she ended up with no chicks.

Errrr......uuummmmm.....get two dozen or so

and that should take care of it.

Welcome to the addiction and the bigger group of enablers you will even find.

from your not too far east neighbor. Right now is a wonderful time to get a few more chicks from the local feed store. That way, if you have one roo and one hen you can hedge your bets so when you get rid of the roo( I hear they go fast on craigs list) your one hen won't be lonely. Chickens seem to do better in threes and fives and..... Have fun.

One of the mom's from my son's little league team is a kindergarten teacher. I have her convinced to do a hatching project next year. I think i'm gonna try to leash train one of my chicks, and take it when they start if the school will let me. I'm sure most of the kids have never seen a real chicken before.

Hello and welcome! Same thing happened to me - we "adopted" the 2nd grade chickens. We LOVE them and often have different kids from the class over to see how they've grown - the kids love that!

You'll find lots of help here. Be sure to post pics of your chicks in the "what breed or gender" section. (I think that's what it's called).

Good luck with the chickees!
