Kuhl nest pads

Hi all!!! We're just getting ready to put in our nest boxes for our young ladies, and were planning on using some plastic milk crates that we have. I was wondering if anyone has any experience using the Kuhl plastic nest pads? We got some of them, but they feel kind of sharp and I can't imagine a hen wanting to stand on that to lay an egg! Are they supposed to stand on it or are they meant for a different kind of nest box, like where the hen perches above it or something?

Any advice would be great!

I've never even heard of them!

When I had chickens, they were happy laying eggs in a nest made of nice, soft hay or wood shavings.
