A four alarm fire destroyed a barn at a large southeastern Wisconsin egg farm. Estimated 300,000 chickens lost. S&R Egg Farm is a third-generation, family-owned business founded in 1958, the 800 acre farm has 2.4 million hens and produces 2 million eggs a day. They have 14 other barns that weren't damaged. Crews from three counties pumped over 500,000 gallons of water in a 16-hour battle against a blaze. The multi-story two year old barn was 20,000 square feet.

What a horrible thing to happen! I can't picture those kind of numbers. I suppose out of 2.5 million hens , 300,000 doesn't seem that much to the owners. Two million eggs a day - good grief.

On a business that scale they would likely more focused on the loss of the building and the basic logistics of replacing the birds. But you never know, it is a family owned business, I'm sure they are horrified but need to go forward with the business.

What a sad thing. Chicken farmers place so much trust in a system that can so easily break down! I can imagine the loss is devastating. Hopefully they will rebuild and continue with their business!
