So, some of you may have read my integration story of Gwyneth the mean hen. I had put pinless peepers in her to help with the issue. They worked great, till yesterday, when I noticed she was breathing heavily. Then later in the day, I noticed that her nostrils were bleeding. I removed the peepers, and she bled quite a lot for a few minutes. Her breathing was still labored when she went to roost.

Today, she is still exhibiting labored breathing, but otherwise acting normally. She has been eating fine, drinking, pooping, etc. She even laid an egg today. She is also back to terrorizing the other 8 chicks every chance she gets.

She is a 2 year old ISA Brown hen. I see her throat constrict quits a lot when she breathes, and there is a raspiness to it.

I started giving her Terramycin scours tablets..1/4 tablet last night, then the same dose twice today. This was to help in case she has some sort of infection. I’m at a loss as to what is going on, and whether the peepers contributed to the issues or not. I’ll try to post a video.

Hey sorry it doesn’t look like anyone got back to you. How is she doing now?

I came across your post as I have a chick who I think has a slight rasp sound when she breathes sometimes. She seemed poorly this afternoon but has perked up a bit - but still opens her beak sometimes - usually after eating or drinking. We wondered if she had something stuck or an infection maybe.

Do you think your hen’s trouble could be related to the peepers? I think you’ve done the right think to try and treat potential infection. I would do the same thing, but not sure what to use, or what dose, especially for a 2.5 week old chick.

Hope Gwyneth gets better...

Even though she seems to be breathing with more difficulty, it doesn’t seem to be affecting her in any other way. She is eating, drinking, laying eggs, and being very aggressive towards others. I have her in chicken jail, deciding whether or not to even keep her around. She attacks all my littles, and her best friend for two years now.

Oh dear Gwyneth... sounds like she hasn’t done herself any favours! Well I hope you get her sorted out one way or another.
I also have a hen who has become aggressive around the chicks and broody, which was out of character as she always seemed sweet. She’s gone and made herself broody now though... chickens eh?!

Her best bud, Daisy, is the broody one, which may also be why she is attacking her. I’d like to give the peepers a try again, if not for the issues I had. They were working, and everyone was together.
