Ok...so I'm kind of sort of rescueing a lady amherst hen. These people (someone my sister works with) tried to sell me a trio last year for $175 or something. I said I wasn't going to pay that much for them but if they needed a home I'd take them. Now I'm asked if I want the last hen. Apparently the roo and the other hen died. Sis thinks that people aren't maybe taking care of them. Like forgetting to feed and water and what not thats why they died. No idea on her condition. She's getting dropped off tonight. About all I do know is that she has never been outside on grass or anything. She's been kept in a cage/pen in a barn. Anything I need to know? Can she eat chicken feed for now? I've got 16% egg mash pellets and 18% duck and goose finisher pellets as of right now. Any other information would be great. Should I try and find her a new mate? Or at least another hen?

To be sure you could worm her and keep her seperate from your own birds for a week or so to see how she goes.

You would have to be sure that the other birds she was kept with died as a result of no feed or water and not something else so worming her may help.

I would give her a chance to settle first for a while and improve herself before introducing a mate.

More importantly you have taken her to a good home.

Well done and good luck with her.

Well she looks rather well. Apparently they said this is the best she has looked since they had them. Also was told that the previous owners fed and watered them when they remembered to. So I'm pretty sure thats how they died. She is bleeding from her beak a little bit. Apparently she got her face stuck in some wire when they were trying to catch her. She is in a wire pet kennel outside by herself right now but she can see the other birds and they can check her out as well.
