I'm a first time chicken owner and just got back from a five day vacation to find one of our chickens unable to walk, when it tries to walk it attempts on it's knees but lists to one side and falls over.
1) What type of bird , age and weight (does the chicken seem or feel lighter or thinner than the others.)
Sussex, three months old, weight ??
2) What is the behavior, exactly.
Lame, when it attempts to walk it tries on its "knees" but ends up falling over before even taking a step. Tried giving it some water and it vomitted it up and struggled to breath and appeared to be gagging. I also noticed when holding it some flakes are coming off its legs as if its dry but maybe that is typical. :/
3) How long has the bird been exhibiting symptoms?
We just returned from a five day trip and found it unable to walk. Chicken was fine the day we left for our trip so the longest possible time would be five days but I don't know when in the last five days it started.
4) Are other birds exhibiting the same symptoms?
We have five birds total. This is the only one exhibiting symptoms
5) Is there any bleeding, injury, broken bones or other sign of trauma.
None
6) What happened, if anything that you know of, that may have caused the situation.
Unfortunately, I do not know what happened
7) What has the bird been eating and drinking, if at all.
Eating organic scratch and peck layer food. We just switched the food ten days ago from the starter to the layer food.
8) How does the poop look? Normal? Bloody? Runny? etc.
Normal and sometimes runny dark green
9) What has been the treatment you have administered so far?
trying to get it hydrated with water (assuming it wasn't able to access food or water) but the chicken vomitted up all the water it drank. Has not eaten any food offered.
10 ) What is your intent as far as treatment? For example, do you want to treat completely yourself, or do you need help in stabilizing the bird til you can get to a vet?
Umm I really don't know my nine year old daughter is in tears trying to comfort it. I'm hoping to treat it myself but would be willing to take it to a vet if there was any hope of helping it.
11) If you have a picture of the wound or condition, please post it. It may help.
This is basically all it can do is lean to one side.
12) Describe the housing/bedding in use
Bedding is sand. Housing is chain link run with wood coop
Just want to add I'm wondering if it may have vomited the water because it over drank from being so dehydrated
