So my chicken (not sure if boy or girl, we think it's a black Orpington Frizzle) has a lame leg. Hes been in isolation for a week and it doesn't seem to be getting better. We put him in the garden area adjacent to chicken area during the days and have a cozy cage in the garage at night. Any suggestions?

The legs and feet look crusty and cracked, which could be a sign of scaly leg mites. Those can be treated with ivermectin pour-on 0.1 ml per every 2 pounds of weight when using the 5 mg per ml variety. Or you can soak the legs in warm soapy or Epsom salts water, and apply a thick oil (petroleum jelly, veg or olive oil, mineral or castor oil) once or twice a week.

Oh wow. I couldn't find any mites despite where we looked. We'll definitely try that. Today we just reapplied fresh wood ash to him and the entire flock. Thank you so much.
