We haven't been doing this chicken thing very long and already we've an injury. While carrying a chick, not sure how old, he's feathered out, to the coop my boy tripped over the dog, dropped the chicken and in the chaos accidentally stepped on the chick's foot. The chicken doesn't care to put the foot down now. He will briefly but is mostly hopping about. I've checked the leg and nothing seems amiss there, everything moves correctly, no swelling, no heat, the toes are straight enough and they curl up. He shows no obvious signs of distress while being manipulated. Is this something that will work itself out or should I be making a little ace bandage for him/her?

While I've got you here.....if there are little nubs on the ankles is that where spurs come in or do hens have those too? Both chicks have them. We don't want too roosters!

Okay, he's really not taking any weight on it. Hopping around and steadying with his wing. Is there anything to be done?

Sounds like it could be a broken bone if it was stepped on

Not sure about the spur nubs ....

I'm sure someone will have an answer for you soon though .....

I would do a search for what to do for a broken leg in the mean time.

I hope your chick is feeling better soon !

EDIT - I did a quick search - and found that most seem to recommend splinting the leg with a popsicle stick. You could probably secure it with vet wrap. Possibly keep him/her confined to keep him/her quiet to allow the leg to heal.

Thanks for answering! From what I've figured out, the spur nubs happen on both boys and girls so I still don't know what I have. As for the injury if I splint it, you figure I should make the splint longer than the leg so he can use it as a crutch??
