how old should be chicks be before they no longer need the light on them? do they need to be feathered out before they are safe? I still have them inside but don't know if they still need the light.

thanks

How old are they? I have 3 polish chicks that hatched out on the 24th of Jan. They are still in the house, so no heat lamp for them... They say to decrease the brooder temp 5 degrees every week for eight weeks. I've never left a chick in a brooder for 8 weeks.

Unless you live in a pretty warm area, I'd want them feathered out before getting rid of the lamp... If you're just tired of dust in the house or whatever, can you move the lamp out to the coop??? Either way, you should be working on decreasing temps. by around 5 degrees each week...either will less wattage or by moving the lamp further away from them.
