I couldn't keep myself from it anymore. I was looking on Ebay, etc. and decided to go ahead and hatch some of my Langshan eggs...

I put them in on Friday night and candled them today. From the looks of the development, I have 7 out of 9 eggs with development. Not bad for the first few eggs from the "old" hens! I KNEW if I bought those hens and gave them good food they'd start giving me eggs! HA!

And...Clyde's daughter started laying and is back in with her father...her first egg shows development also! It's a bit small, but I thought "what the heck?"

The eggs are set to hatch on April 9, but I'm expecting them anytime around then...found out that doing the dry incubation is the best and adding humidity at the end is the best bet. I add the humidity a week before hatch so I can cover the "early" ones.

Sorry for the bad quality pics, but cell phones can only do so much...

I suppose us old-timers don't get the replies like the newbies. Oh well...I'm gonna keep you updated whether you like it or not!

Eggs are going on Week 2. They're due to hatch April 9. So far, still 5 out of 9 eggs.

Looks like 2 quitters and 2 infertiles.

I used to, but it didn't work out all that well. Actually, with this incubator I haven't had good hatches at all. 3 out of no matter how many eggs always hatch.

Anyway, the best hatch I have EVER gotten was 35 out of 37 eggs from a still-air incubator. They were in an egg-carton at 101.3 with 73% humidity.

This incubator is...well...I'm never getting another forced air incubator again.

What would you like to know about the Langshans?

As for the dry incubation, I'd prefer 40% humidity in the incubator, but this apartment is very dry. I'm having to add one warm wet sponge each day to keep it at 40%. This next week (Friday) I'll be adding a second sponge. Then, three days before, I'll add a vial of water to help. I try not to mist...just not my favorite thing. With waterfowl eggs though, I soak those suckers down!
