Laser/ Infared thermometer for testing egg temp? Tell me ...

HI I've read more than once lately of folks using laser/ infaret thermometers to test eggs that are incubating.

Tell me more please? What are you looking for as far as a temp range? Someone said something about telling if the chick is still alive and just slow to develop/hatch by the temp. What would you find in a temp difference of a slow to develop and a deceased chick?

This is new to me and I am curious about more info from those of you who have used these and had success (or failures) with them.

Did you read this on BYC? The part about telling if the chick was slow...I've never heard this before.
I'd like to read what you did.


I would not trust a laser type thermometer. I've used one to measure the temp inside a bator and it was too off.

Interestingly, I have found my Braun ear thermometer to be quite accurate and a good way to check to see if a late term egg is dead or alive. @Texas Kiki, you remember my deceased egg #3? Before I opened it I measured the shell temps and all of the live eggs and they read 99.5 to 100.5, but the deceased one was 97.5 even though it was in a warmer spot in the incubator.

Of course I don't trust this 100%, but it can be a useful tool.

That is what I was wondering about. I have two or three eggs that are registering about 3 degrees lower than the rest of the eggs that are in the same temp area of the incubator and not in cool spots. I was thinking they might be deceased but am holding out hope for the others still.

Also have you tried moving the eggs around the bator and waiting a few hours then check the temps again?
