Hi all! I've got a super sweet hen who's less than a year old that was acting fine this morning but now seeming uncomfortable. She was hanging out inside the coop (which isn't common) a little fluffed up and not interested in any scratch grains when I spread them. Her crop feels normal, slightly smaller than everyone else's maybe but otherwise it feels okay. She does keep "lip licking" and clacking her beak but her breath doesn't smell as if she had sour crop.

I took her inside, made her a house in a large dog kennel with some food, water and grit and left her alone for about an hour. I came back and discovered this jelly like substance that mimics thick egg whites and is kind of squishy. It was in some clearing liquid with a small amount of poop. She's still acting off, but a bit more alert. I'm just wondering what the heck this could be?

Thanks in advance for your time!

Looks like a soft shell membrane.

Was it intact, do you have photos of the rest of it?

I'd start giving her Extra Calcium ASAP. You can give 1 Calcium Citrate+D3 tablet now, then once daily for 5 days. If you don't have that give her 1 TUMS now, then once daily for 5 days.

Likely she has another egg, egg material, etc. on the way and is having a hard time expelling it.

Do make sure she has access to fresh water during waking hours. Provide her with her normal feed.

Tysm for the response! I feed an all flock pellet because we have a rooster and I offer 24/7 oyster shells and have recently been feeding the egg shells back to the hens. She normally lays beautiful healthy looking brown eggs but this morning i found the other half of a very soft egg shell with yolk all over.

she seems a bit happier this morning, pacing in the dog kennel shes in rather than being lethargic but still not 100%

should I offer anything else other than oyster shell? Im worried she's not eating as much calcium as she should be. I'll pick up some of that supplement today and start her on it.

Thanks again!

If she's doing better, I'd let her back with her flock and monitor her from there.

Sometimes these things can be a glitch. I just give extra Calcium for several days.

Thank you again so much, I worry about these silly birds lol. She is completely normal now, back to herself and very happy to be back with the flock!
