After dark tonight I found a baby chick in a nest that must have hatched after the mother left with the others, she has not returned to the nest and since our chickens are free range and we have 4 acres and its dark I could not find her. We have around 30 chickens and 2 hens have babies. I don't know which one it belongs to. I have it in a box with some grass and straw, I managed to use an eye dropper to give it a drink, it peed and pooped, at least what I think was poop. It is chirping for its mother so I've got at least 5 hours before daylight and I don't know what to do.

Keep it warm, you can us a heating pad or light bulb but give it enough space that the chick can move away from the heat if too warm. A cozy stuffed animal or towel "nest" may help keep it warm & comfort.

If you plan on trying to add it to one of your hens at day light, keep a close eye on her reaction. If you need to rear it yourself, get a mirror so it can see it's reflection thinking it's another chick. Hope you can add it to a hen & her brood, good luck.

Thank you for responding, I was feeling so bad for it, I hope it works, it should, I will watch though, I noticed earlier today that some of them had switched moms, one had 3 and the other one had 10 so hopefully it will work.

If the chick is on it's own it will be cold and scared, honestly I'd try to find either of the mums and put it under her from behind while it is still dark and they won't even know (hopefully).
