Hey all, I’ve been seeing Silvers marketed as Lavenders or Blues and it’s confusing me. I was under the inpression that Silver (B) was a different gene then Lavender (LAV*L).

Does breeding LAV*L birds also cause genetic issues just like breeding Silvers together would? If not, it seems really irresponsible to market them as Lavenders 😬

As far as I know lavender is different to blue and silver, it is also recessive so it does not cause problems when bred together

As far as I know there are 3 types of gray - silver, blue, and lavender. The issues only occur with the schofield silver collection, I believe lavender is recessive. If someone is marketing SSC as lavender, that is definitely shady, and most likely mildly scammy, since people can be convinced to pay more for what is promised as more healthy silvers.

Yes! Exactly. I feel like as a community we need to call this out more. SSC is not the same thing as Lavender and it’s unethical to say so.

Imagine people breeding two quail they believe are lavenders only to get a clutch of dead babies or genetic issues like blindness.

Well I guess a lot of the problem is access to the information. Most of the color names and definitions beyond those readily available from commercial hatcheries can really only be researched in breeders groups on social media. Many people probably have no idea what the distinction is or even that there are differences. The SSC and the German pastel collection have many varieties within varieties and crossing different dilutions create so many colors that it’s nearly impossible to know them all. Many people will honestly think they have lavender because the color looks lavender to them. I think a good word of caution is if you think you have lavender, cross it to something else that you know has no silver and doesn’t carry lavender at all, if you get any gray chicks, it’s not lavender.
