Lavender Orphington chick has yellow! I thought I was doing this right!!!

Hello...I bought some expensive lavender Orphington chicks from a breeder. I wanted to breed them to enlarge my flock so I did a bit of research and decided to buy proper stock to start. The chicks I have from Bomgaars have feather shredding so I didn't want to go that route.

I know there's probably people out there who say leave it to the pros but I'm trying as hard as I can to learn as much as I can to make a good flock.

My chicks hatched today and all are beautiful lavs, and one is not!!! There's no way they were with any other roo so now I'm working that I have some mixed breed in my starter flock!!!

I only have the two girls and they're getting too much attention from him so their poor backs are a mess... but don't worry I check their skin regularly and clean out any dirt. I will get them saddles if I have to.

I admit that I don’t know much about chicken genetics but do know about cattle genetics. When cattle are bred up to purebred status when starting out with another breed or cross and then breeding each subsequent generation to a purebred of the desired breed the animals still retain some of the original traits and when mated with another animal of similar heritage some expression of underlying traits can manifest even after several generations. I’m going on the assumption that lavender Orpingtons are a relatively new strain so quite possibly your yellow chick is just expressing the buff color variety of Orpingtons maybe not too many generations back.

If you know of anyone who might be able to comment please reference them. I'd really appreciate some more input on this.

I had 15 hatch and that's out of 18 eggs so I'm really pleased...and apart from the yellow chick I think they turned out really great!
