Lavender Splash Orpington?

He has been out in the sun alot only until recently ; since i moved and now they have a covered pen. I thought his type wasnt that bad compared to many thin taller Lavender Orpies i have seen. Guess i was wrong. LoL. Ah well. Im still keeping him....he will make some nice soup when he is older and its his time.

Don't count him out just yet... some things can be worked on... when he goes into molt, get a good pic of him as soon as he finishes... if he molts out solid Lavender, then he's just sunbleached... my pens aren't fully shaded and though they have shade, my roosters prefer to stand in the sun most of the day... the only time their color looks good is right after molt for a little while, lol...

Just sayin', give hime time... I got rid of a beautiful rooster cuz I thought he had leakage and kept one that I thought didn't... I was wrong on both counts and all I need to do was see how he had feathered out after molt and it would have been obvious...

Plus if he's a good rooster, no need to make soup... I'd rather have a good mongrel boy than a show quality pure bird that's an a**hole... ;)

I am happy I saw your post. My Lavender Orpington rooster also got a yellow tint in his feathers after being out in the sun free ranging this year. When I had him in the barn last year he stayed a nice lavender color. I am new to the Orpington breed. I read you are suppose to breed to a black Orpington to keep good color going. Is this true?

No, it's not for the color... breeding Lavender to Lavender is best for the color, but breeding black into it helps the feather quality and sometimes for type as well... the Lavender color is prone to fretting, makes the edges of the feathers frayed, and breeding black into it is to help reduce/eliminate that...

Hello everyone. ........was hoping for some advice/critique on an Orpington pullet I bought. This little girl was sold to me as a Lavender which is what i was searching for. She looked a bit different from my current Lavenders but i just figured she was better quality than my flock. LoL. Well, she is now clear not a Lavender but a definite Splash. Her breeder said one of her Splash or Blue cockerels may have bred one of her Lavender hens. She was just as surprised as I was when she saw the pictures I sent her. Im attaching a photo of the day i btought her home (on top the priority box).......and a few pics from the other day. Also......one of my Lavender Orpington rooster and one of my hens.

My biggest question is........would she be considered a Lavender Splash or is she a Blue Splash? I bought her to breed with my Lavender or my Black split to Lavender Roos.

Thank you guys!

I know this is old, but are her lavenders super light? Blue and lavender are both dilute genes. So a blue lavender would just look like a lighter lavender. And then you’d get splash lavender sometimes from mixing blue lavender x blue lavender.

A bird can be both blue and lavender. They’re different dilute genes.

To me though, this looks like Isabella patterning. So maybe you have Isabella cuckoo chicks 🙂 Some people don’t know Isabella is different from lavender so the woman you bought them from might have been telling the truth (to her knowledge). Isabella is lavender on top of partridge. It ends up looking like love deer mixed with cream

I know this is old but see my recent post. Sounds like you have an “isabella” or “Isabel” colored bird
