laws about keeping chickens

Just starting to think about including chickens in our ever-growing backyard. However, we are not sure what the laws are for keeping chickens in a yard. Does anyone know how to find that out or a good site? We are in Orange County, CA. Thanks, M

Don't know what city you're in, but in Los Angeles you can have unlimited # of chickens, as long as they're 20ft from residence. Surprising!

You can also speak to your local town hall, but sometimes they don't *quite* know what they're on about.

Most cities have their regulations posted somewhere online. It might take a little digging, but you can probably find them. Sometimes the people at city hall will give an answer they think is right, but might not be. I had to play around a little with links to find my cities complete posting on poultry.

I think this is the Orange County CA zoning ordinance.... if not just google your town name and "zoning" and you should find a PDF of the laws. Then use the Acrobat "search" function and look for "chickens", "hens", "fowl", "poultry", "livestock", and find what it says about them for your particluar district or zone. I have been doing this a lot lately as we try to change our town's law.

On a quick search of the above ordinance, there does not seem to be any restrictions. Lucky you!
