I am a newbie and have heard either us fine, but both have pros/cons. May I ask you guys? Also, does sand as a cage base also work as grit?

! Great to have you in our community! Yes, fine sand can work as grit. Pellets or mash...I find they waste less with pellets. I've heard some folks say when they switch from mash to pellets their chickens refuse to eat. My thought is, if they are hungry enough they will eat. Good luck to you!

Give them layer CRUMBLES!! The smaller breeds will NOT touch it. My friends chicken, a smaller breed, actually got half starved to death before she realized that it was impossible for the chicken to eat the pellets. Easier digestion anyways

I prefer crumbles rather than pellets or mash. If you have a good feeder system established, you won't have much feed waste. Good luck!

I tried pellets but my birds hated them, especially the bantams. I used them for quite a while and they did not eat as much, preferring to forage in the pasture more. I finally switched back to crumbles and they are eating much better. They are happier and egg production even improved. Stubborn girls, but they know what they like. And I have very, very little waste. I have my feeders elevated on a thick, flat square of wood and they clean up most of what few crumbles fall out, where as with pellets they just billed them out of the feeder and left them. To each his own, some people like pellets, crumbles is what works for me.
