Layer feed???

I just read a comment that suggested that I should change from layer feed during moult or when my girls are not laying during winter months. This can be 4-5 months. I do feed extra protein during moult, but I’ve never changed feed when they are on a vacay. Thanks!

Feeding layers feed to chickens for a few months during molt won't hurt them. They don't need the extra Calcium when they're not laying, but won't harm them in that time frame.
I have 6 of 7 hens not laying. One is retired (hasn't laid since June), the others are in molt or have finished, but haven't resumed laying.
I feed a Non-Medicated Starter-Grower or a All-Flock/Flock Raiser crumble year round with Oyster Shells separately. I like the higher protein 18-20% versus 16% for most Layer feed. GC

I also fed layer all year, until this winter. Now, because of what I've read on BYC, I have switched the coops that have non-winter layers to an all-flock feed. I throw oyster shell into the mixed coops that have both winter producers and girls who are taking a break. But I live in a rural area, and if I am out of all-flock, everybody eats layer feed until I get to town -- like during last week's blizzard. But I never noticed any ill effects from feeding layer year-round when I did it.
