We have a couple chicks that were hatched via broody hen. Our 16 laying hens have free choice layer pellets and free-range during the day. I put down a small waterer and feeder with chick starter in it for the chicks. The chicks are doing great, eating and drinking. I was reading on another forum that a poster commented that he only used non-medicated chick starter since his laying hens were also snacking on it. Our hens are still eating the laying pellets, but they are eating the chick starter too. The current brand I have is non-medicated, but this isn't the normal brand I buy. Normally, it IS a medicated chick starter. But I've never raised chicks alongside layers. Is there a danger to the hens by eating medicated (through the eggs?)? Is it dangerous for the chicks to eat non-medicated?

Humans that are allergic to the type of medication used that eat the eggs can react to it.

If you are not allergic to the medication it shouldn't be a problem for you...

I do not serve medicated starter due to ducks and layers.
